tomatoes in baskets
« on: May 07, 2013, 09:11 »
Hi, Just a quick question: I have some tomato plants that are destined for hanging baskets in the poly tunnel.  At the moment they are growing happily in pots in my poly tunnel. At what size do you think I can put them into hanging baskets - given they are already growing where they will be finally situated?

My Gartenperle toms are only about 3 inches high so I'm waiting a little bit longer to put them in the baskets.

If they look ready for their final placing, then they should be fine. :)

I've a question related to toms in baskets so instead of a new thread I thought i'd ask here!
I have 4  14inch deep pointy baskets with 1 Gartenperle tom in each one - is there room do any of you reckon for 2 in each basket as I have some spare Gartenperle that are a month later sown, that I feel a shame to waste?

Anyone have experience these toms? I've never grown hanging basket toms before.
 :)

These are Gartenperle growing in the smaller supermarket flower buckets, which are 10ins wide and 7in deep. Do you think you'd get 2 in one of those pointy bottomed baskets? You'll have one hell of a job with the watering if you try  :nowink:

Don't forget to put a small saucer/tray in the bottom or some water retaining gel in the compost as they do tend to dry out quickly and then become difficult to water as it runs right through...

I've been growing gartenperle in baskets for 3years now and definitely wouldn't put more than one plant in each one.       Last year I had 2 Roma in one pot, but it was a BIG pot.

I did use water retaining gel Auntie, and the baskets are lined with plastic inside so little if any escaping ;)
Thanks :)

Grannie - my Roma VF toms are each in a growpot of their own - 3 to one Tomorite growbag - I wouldn't dream of doubling them up! :D
