Potato flower buds dropping off.
« on: June 10, 2011, 10:00 »
I was wondering if there was a specific reason for this?

My daughter planted a seed potato in a bucket in the garden, the top growth grew well and started to flower, before the flowers could fully open all of the buds have fallen off. Any reason? Sorry, cant remember variety.

Ive had a 'look' under the soil, theres appears to be some tasty big spuds growing, no problem there.
We lived for days on nothing but food and water.

Not all spuds produce berries, or even flowers.

Use this to do a search on your variety, which you don't mention, and all will be revealed!

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Some varieties of potatoes will produce flower buds that do this.

I have never seen flowers on my spuds grown in containers, not this year nor previous years, and that's across a range of different varieties from first earlies, second earlies to maincrop. No idea why. Maybe they disappear fast and I'm just really unobservant, but it never seems to stop me getting plenty of nice spuds.

I've had some really nice flowers on my container spuds this year, just hoping all the goodness isn't going into flowers instead of spuds!

Well, I've just posted on the harvest thread, I think they were Arran Pilot in tubs, and Charlotte in the ground with just single flowers. But if these flowers are unusual I might have to have a furtle to see if there is anything strange going on down there......... :D
