Had mine in for a while and they've done very well. Can anyone tell me when they are ready to harvest? And, not being an experience grower, could anyone tell me how I will know if they have bolted or not?

cheers
Before you criticise someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes.
That way, when you criticise them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

Hi there Rutters.  This is the first time I have ever grown Pak Choi and they are doing really well.  I'm just a novice to veg growing but believe you will soon tell if they get really tall and leggy.  I left it a bit late to thin the seedlings and stir fried the thinnings yesterday.  OUT OF THIS WORLD   Maybe it's beginners luck, but I will be growing this a lot in future.

I thought pak choi was one of the things you had to sow after midsummer?

Didn't know that.  Put some in two weeks ago, to give it a try and it's doing fine, but maybe with the hot April we had it thinks it is midsummer.

As long as it works for you.   I found this on Google since I was afraid I'd dreamt it : http://www.realseeds.co.uk/Newsletter06.html

Thanks. I didn't have a proper packet, so had no planting instructions.  I shall keep a close eye on them in case they start to bolt, and kee p the rest of the seeds for later.

Just for info:  I grow them all year round in a raised bed in the centre of the greenhouse.
We tend to use them when they're about six to eight inches high with about six leaves.  You can leave them to develop a flower stalk and use them like that - as the chinese often do.

If you're interested in vegetables from the far east, then I'd recommend Joy Larkcom's 'Oriental vegetables' which has to be the most comprehensive book on the subject that is available.

I sow mine in 5" flower pots - 1 seed to a pot.   Never had any bolt and I grow them from March until the frosts in the greenhouse.  Echo Ginny's advice on height and no. of leaves.  They lose their crispness a little if allowed to go too far.    Oh and water regularly - they prefer to be damp otherwise they will bolt.
