Heat lamps
« on: October 21, 2010, 11:52 »
I'm thinking about getting a heat lamp for my coop for the winter months.

Need some advice on types and if its ok to use them in small coops - ours houses 4-6 birds and is wood so was worried about the potential of starting a fire

Hens come with their very own feather duvets... a heat lamp will not be necessary, even in the depths of winter.

Cold doesn't usually kill chooks in our winters, but draughts can Holly.  Just make sure they have enough ventilation, but don't get lots of draughts.  They'll be fine!

maybe I am getting a bit ott but it did get rather cold last year or am I the only one who remembers the -9 early mornings!!

Will endeavor to block up all the drafts and keep them cosy that way!

I must agree that it was terribly cold. This year I have got hold of (through my local freecycle) some stone ware hot water bottles. When I requested the bottles on freecyle I was totally honest about what I wanted them for and I was amazed about how generous fellow freecyclers were. My family think I'm barking ??? but if we have a repeat performance of last winters cold snap I'll pop one in the house with the hens but far enough away for them not to have to be right next to it. This is all probably just for my peace of mind really and the hens would be perfectly OK without it.

And here is the proof, http://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?topic=48943.0

Very little heat lost from their duvet. :)
