Greyhound Cabbage - Ready ?????
« on: June 30, 2011, 10:26 »
Hi all,

I'm growing this type of cabbage - around about 10 of them.

They are really quite large now, the hearts are bulking up and the outer leaves are massive.

But the question is - when can i start to pull them and eat them.
Also, can you eat the outer leaves ??

I'm dying to get me hands on one or two for a nice roast !!!!

Cheers

 :D :D

Outer leaves will be tough, the answer to the other bit is very subjective, but a good guide is when there's enough to make a meal!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I'm eating mine, but I don't like the outside leaves much.........but sometimes use them in bubble and squeak or colcannon  ;)

I squeeze the head to see how much it is likely to contain -- and I really don't eat the outside leaves unless they are finely shredded in stir fry

So basically the heart / centre is what i'm after !!
When i think big enough just pull it up, wash it, boil it and eat it yeah ??

No special way of harvesting or anything ???

Cheers,
Keith.

If you cut the cabbage off and leave a few of the outer leaves  you sometimes get tiny cabbages growing in the leaf axes, not really worth it IMHO, but might be worth doing if you have the space/inclination to leave them

Most of us quite commonly are. Not just out of ignorance or preference but out of necessity, too, as the outer leaves are often spoiled by something or other. Also, different uses as they are indeed tougher. However, they contain the most valuable gooddies for you and perfectly fine in heavier cooking, like stews, soups, etc.

I tend to pull up the whole plant because it gives the others a bit more room  :)

....No special way of harvesting or anything ?...

You do of course know that you have to wear a robe of white samite (mystic. wonderful) and cut the  cabbages with a special sickle that has a blade of pure hafnium and a handle fashioned from a unicorn's horn, at full moon time by the light of burning marestail roots, all the while chanting the lyrics from the early songs of Joni Mitchell but excluding 'Big Yellow Taxi' of course....

Serious business, cutting cabbages...

What?  Oh.  Just me then.....

Same here.  I harvest every other one.  Greyhound needs it's space.
