Maidenhair fern going brown
« on: December 20, 2012, 10:05 »
I have yet another houseplant that seems doomed to failure. I keep it at the temp required, water when needed and the leaves are going brown and dying  :(

Apparently these plants are very hard to grow.

Apparently any of your plants are hard to grow!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

maidenhairs need a very humid atmosphere r they will dry out...........

Best suited to a shower/bathroom.

I have seen them growing wild in a greenhouse. I have put it near a radiator for heat and away from the window as they don't like too much sunlight. Keeping soil moist.

Putting it near a radiator will make its atmosphere very dry.  Stand it in a tray of water with pebbles to keep the base of the pot out of the water.

I love maidenhair ferns but have given up growing them as house conditions rarely suit them.

They don't like dry air so in addition to Aunt Sally's advice I'd add : give it a spray mist  every couple of days.

Why are maidenhair ferns so hard to grow ?
I have a sick maidenhead fern that has been patchy since I got it 2 years ago. I do everything right for this plant and yet the leaves still go brown and die  :(

I had one a few years ago which did the same. Someone told me they can only be grown in a greenhouse in humid weather. The greenhouse at a nursery I sometimes work at has them self seeded and growing naturally. I was told as soon as you try and pot one up they will die.

There is a garden plant with foliage similar to maidenhair fern.  It has yellow flowers - can't remember the name though.  Perhaps you are seeing that growing wild.

Thanks Mum

It grows in with my rhubarb on the allotment :)

That's a plant you should try, Hubballi.

Perhaps not suitable for your garden Hubballi :(

Care: This woodland species does not tolerate high humidity and high temperatures during the summer months or wet soils during winter, but is otherwise adaptable as long as it is planted in full sun or part shade.
