What do you grow in pots?
« on: January 20, 2008, 14:01 »
Hi all,

As i only have a patio i'm very interested in what people grow in containers.

I've got a bit of information from books, seed catalogues etc but theres no substitute for actual experience is there...

So what do you all grow in containers and what size are the pots?

Do old fridges count as pots?  If so, in summer, basil, lettuce, peppers, in winter, parsley, tried cabbages (but didn't do well) and chives.

Almost anything you want provided the pot is big enough.  I grow the following in containers (mostly 120 litre sacks) :
jerusalem artichoke
chinese artichoke
potato
mint
horseradish

We threw our potatoes in a rubbish bin last year.
If it wasn't for chemicals we'd be organic.

Strawberries ( a success), blueberries (ditto) and apples (not sure yet).

I tried with gooseberries - no joy sadly.

I usually grow potatoes in a dustbin.  You're only supposed to grow earlies but I grew Harlequin last year - which I think are a maincrop, might be a second early.  Lovely crop.  The drainage holes are an inch or so up the sides from the bottom and I've got a layer of gravel inside at the bottom so I've got a reservoir at the bottom  :)

Other than that I might grow 1 or 2 chile peppers or sweet peppers in a plant house (in 9" pots) but only if I run out of space in the ground.

I hate the frequent watering pots require.  Would rather grow in the ground.

Mint I suppose, which does seem to survive the infrequent watering  :D
Oh and a azalea which my brother for some reason gave me one birthday    It hasn't died yet.
