Hi all,
As i only have a patio i'm very interested in what people grow in containers.
I've got a bit of information from books, seed catalogues etc but theres no substitute for actual experience is there...
So what do you all grow in containers and what size are the pots?
-
personally nothing but thats only coz I kill anything in pots! so not much help really! but I do grow seedlings but am guessing thats not what you mean!
-
Do old fridges count as pots? If so, in summer, basil, lettuce, peppers, in winter, parsley, tried cabbages (but didn't do well) and chives.

Almost anything you want provided the pot is big enough. I grow the following in containers (mostly 120 litre sacks) :
jerusalem artichoke
chinese artichoke
potato
mint
horseradish

Yeah sorry about that, my useless computer! Wonder if it'd work as a planter?

Not a problem :D

We grew potatoes in a rubbish bin one year - it was quite a success

We threw our potatoes in a rubbish bin last year.

  Quite!

i grew my potatoes in black sacks last year.
-
Strawberries ( a success), blueberries (ditto) and apples (not sure yet).
I tried with gooseberries - no joy sadly.

I usually grow potatoes in a dustbin. You're only supposed to grow earlies but I grew Harlequin last year - which I think are a maincrop, might be a second early. Lovely crop. The drainage holes are an inch or so up the sides from the bottom and I've got a layer of gravel inside at the bottom so I've got a reservoir at the bottom :)
Other than that I might grow 1 or 2 chile peppers or sweet peppers in a plant house (in 9" pots) but only if I run out of space in the ground.
I hate the frequent watering pots require. Would rather grow in the ground.
Mint I suppose, which does seem to survive the infrequent watering :D
Oh and a azalea which my brother for some reason gave me one birthday  It hasn't died yet.

Tomatoes, herbs, peppers, chillis, strawberries.
-
well I grow the usual tomato's, peppers etc...
but runner beans grow great in a 50ltr tub with just a bag of cheap multi purpose compost added - a simple wigwam of canes, feed and water and wallop a load of beans, I change the compost every year, chuck the old lot on the allotment or garden....

How big are the pots growing tomatoes & peppers & chilis? I'm thinking of converting 50 litre soap containers for just this purpose.

Oh dear, I don't know the size, I just inherited tons of various size plant pots, so most of the herbs are in quite small ones until they need repotting, I have a few mid size pots plus a strawberry planter thingie for my strawberries and one for my mint as that comes back every year, and largish pots (you know the sort you can get from petrol stations) for my peppers and chillis (if I can get them to grow that is!). I think depending on the varieties herbs, peppers and chillis can be kept in smallish pot, it's nice in my opinion to have lots of different herbs to start with.

50 litres is great for tomatoes. Could readily be halved for chiles and peppers.
Can you post a piccie please?

... tomatoes, chillies, sweet peppers, coriander, mint, chives, sage, thyme, spuds, sweetcorn, french beans, runner beans, peas, lettuce, bay, melons, rocket and strawberries.
Oh and garlic and shallots.
Oh and I currently have lemon grass, root ginger and am trying curry plant (for curry leaves as opposed to the curry plant that we normally have in our gardens).
The bigger the container the better and never ever forget to water them on a hot sunny day.
-
I've only got a small garden so I keep all my herbs in smallish pots.
-
Runner Beans, Sunflowers, Chillis n tomatoes.
And if they survive the winter grapevines.

I fancied trying lemon grass how's it working out?
It seems hard to find out this stuff from the nurseries etc so i think i'll just try everything i want to grow and see what happens!!
:D

at the end of the day - you only lose a pot or two of compost and a few seeds - gotta be worth a go

Grapes are seriously hardy, so you shouldn't lose them. They probably look a bit sorry for themselves right now, but come Springtime they'll be away again.
