Oasis turnip
« on: June 21, 2013, 14:08 »
Just picked up a pack of 'oasis turnip' seeds, anybody tried them? Apparentely can be eaten raw like an apple or grated so they taste like melon, interesting
It's like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder how i keep from going under......

I've just started growing them this year. I like them. Not sure they taste much like melons though. I like them more because they are ready to eat in about 8 weeks, don't require much space and you can eat the leaves. A worthwhile addition to my veg patch.

I have grown them for 3 years. They taste a a bit like a  radish but more melony. Great in salads or to add crunch to a sandwich. Easy and fast to grow.

Ghost thank you, I didn’t know you could eat the leaves.

You eat them raw. Just slice them and stick them into the sandwich with your peanut butter. Yummy. He takes them into work and thoroughly enjoys it when people ask what he has in his sandwich.

'peanut butter and raw turnip'  :D

I steam the turnip and leaves together for about 7 minutes and eat them with my main meal. X

Something I've noticed with these though is ants burrow into them and ruin them. I've lost quite a few due to this.

It was the taste and maybe the fact that every damn caterpillar on the planet liked the leaves too. Yet the purple tops have been uncovered, untouched and stunning.

Do you have problems with ants eating the turnip with the purple ones?
