« on: August 14, 2011, 11:50 »
I need advice one of my hens has lost her appetite ( she still eats but not as much as she usually does) She is also sneezing. It seems to me she has a cold.
I don't know if I should be worried or is this perfectly normal. Please help.

have you checked her temp place you hand under a healthy hens wing then place it under the poorly hens wing and see if it's the same or hotter

does she rattle when she breathing?

or it could be dust just making her sneeze

if it were me take her to your vet for a check up.

She has a slight temp. She is laying though. I think it may just be a cold. It has been raining constant for the past 3 days and their coop is like a swamp at the min.
Do you know of any home remedies I could give her.

I heard cider vinegar is good for killing any germs in them.

I'm not sure though. I'm new to this so any advice is greatly appriecated.

thanks

Hi there

yes def sounds like a "cold" or an upper respiratory tract infection.

I have four hens at the moment and from time to time they all get the odd sniffle.
I also use cider apple vinegar in their water once in a while to give them a boost.
I also use garlic granules in their water on a daily basis (except when using the cider vinegar) which is I feel gives them a health boost to combat infection ( and stops the poo from smelling).

If your girl goes off her food I would seek expert assistance from a poultry vet as they can go downhill very quickly without antibiotics or similar but hopefully its just a sniffle caused by the damp conditions.

Regards Graham

Hens don't catch colds !  There are a number of respiratory infections they do catch and the one that looks most like a cold is mycoplasma.

...It has been raining constant for the past 3 days and their coop is like a swamp at the min....

I assume you mean the run is like a swamp rather than the coop?
Run = outdoor space where they run around during the day
Coop = indoor space where they sleep at night (and usually where they lay their eggs)

The coop needs to be warm, dry, clean and draft-free.  If there is any dampness in there, or any ammonia-like smell, you will need to take immediate action to change it.

If the run is like a swamp it would help to give them somewhere they can get up out of the mud during the day.  You could use old pellets, tree branches, a saw horse, etc.  Also if there is any way you could cover the run to give them a dry area that will also help them.

The only 'home remedy' I can suggest is to keep all the chickens warm, dry and well-fed so their bodies are best able to fight off any minor infections.  If her symptoms start to get worse (eg rattly chest or bubbly eyes) then she will need to see a vet.  It concerns me that she has gone off her food.  Can you tempt her by making a slightly damp mash from her usual food?

Garlic in her water could help, but nothing beats a warm, dry home and good food. :)
