Butternut squash help???
« on: October 28, 2008, 15:38 »
I have grown butternut squash (F1 cobnut) for the first time, about 7 squashes have grown but they are all still green and have not gone white/cream coloured as they are supposed to. Im now wondering if i should pick them and keep them in the greenhouse to ripen as we have had some frost the last few nights and will they ripen and go white if i pick them? if not... can i eat them if they are green? Im baffled..... and need some help

Thanks
Tracy

You might as well bring them indoors as the frost will kill off all the plants and the butternuts will just become food for slugs & woodlice     Greenhouse sounds good - I didn't have much success to get them to turn the creamy colour while on a sunny windowsill, but after a couple of weeks decided to try them anyway, and they were lovely.
Failure is only a temporary change in direction to set you straight for your next success.

Thanks for the advice paintedlady. I collected 7 butternut squashes from the allotment this weekend and ive got them in my conservatory at the moment to hopefully ripen a bit more...but after only 2 days i couldnt wait so tonight cooked 2 one i roasted in the oven with a little butter and mixed spice, wth the other i made soup to put in the freezer. You were right they dont need to be a creamy colour they were very tasty

Hear are my usual suspects, minus one that got eaten!

I found that peeling them before roasting gave a better flavour. They are definitely not as sweet as shop bought, but quite a delicate taste.

Will they be ok stored in a shed or will it be too cold??

ps. this is my first successful year, 8 squashes from 2 plants, not bad.

Well you were lucky :)

I had 2 plants this year but only managed 1 squash
Did read somewhere that butternuts are harder to grow than other squash.
Does anyone know of an idiotproof one to grow.

The turk's turban looks lovely but  does it taste good?

Far more than I managed. Only three off three plants, probably because they didn't get started until late july.  :(

Had to supplement the soup with a shop bought one, which made mine look v. feeble. :(  :(

Well done though! :D

I think butternuts are one of the easier ones to grow.  Regarding storage as long as they don't frost they will be fine.

Turk's Turban, Acorn and nearly all the others are delicious - more pronounced flavour than butternut, but more of a faff to peel.
