Butternut Squash
« on: November 08, 2020, 17:20 »
this was the second year we have grew Butternut squash we grew ours on a raised bed but I've been told they grow better on a fence ? if i remember good old Monty said about growing them on a fence or trellis?

i ask the question because I'm thinking about growing  our squashes like we grow our marrows and courgette's on the open ground

a little bit of advise would be most welcome before the next growing season

I always grow nearly all my squash flat on the ground, I'm don't think it's a good idea to try the large/heavy varieties as climbers, the weight of the fruit brings them down, I've found.
The exception for me, is Tromba D’Albenga grown on a teepee but that is definitely a climbing courgette-type squash.

I train mine along a stone wall , no fear of them collapsing  that !
The squashes themselves do not need any support as the stalk is up to the job.

I've grown Tromoncino up goalpost netting. Huge, curly things they were but they did alright and none snapped off.
Also grew Sweet Dumpling up netting, much smaller but with higher number of fruits. So heavy the steam pipes started to bend in the wind.

Tromba d'Albenga is a Tromboncino squash, and I agree
