Post by: flowerofshona on April 08, 2006, 08:31
Just wondered what the oldest seed you have germinated is ???
When my mum died i was clearing the greenhouse out and found he seed tin, in there was a packet of zinnias (persian carpet) they where already 5 years out of date but sealed in foil so i thought i would give them a go so i put a few in and they came up !! so every year i have sown a pinch to see if they come up and this year they are 9 years out of date and have just started to pop up !!! I dont have much seed left but i have to try them again next year as that will be 10 years past there sell by date :)
I always put some on mums grave as i feel they are growing for her.

I had some courgette seeds bought in France and forgotten in the car for 6 years. They ALL germinated.

Actually, I notice French seeds always have much longer useby dates than Brtish - strange that.

Nice touch with your Mum's grave - I take a minature Bells to Dad's. I have a swig and he gets the rest.

Hi Flowerofshona.

My parent in laws went to Italy in apx 1975, and brought back some giant cones, varnshed , purchased as orniments. 1995 saw a clear out, and I brought them to the tip. On cleaning the car boot out I found one and there was stil seed in it, this I panted. and four germinated.
