Hello Everyone 
Last Spring we bought a Salvia Hot Lips & put it in the centre of a flower bed, the label said it would
grow to about a mtr x mtr which would be perfect for the space when needed to fill but it grew much
bigger & needed cutting back but I did hear that it's best to leave till after frosts have gone.
When do you think it will be safe to do it? I look forward to any replies.

Salvias like Hot Lips can suffer from winter die-back, so leaving excess growth on protects from that to an extent.  In the spring, if you prune down low, then the ends of the branches get frosted, you can lose all your buds.

I would prune it down maybe halfway, wait to see where it buds from and then cut down further once you are happy the frost risk has passed.

I am pleased to read this thread, as I was just going to ask about pruning these lovely shrubs.   I have a purple one and a white one.   I shall leave them for a few more weeks yet.   Thanks,  Mrs Bouquet
