Little Cockerel
« on: July 30, 2009, 10:33 »
I am babysitting for 12 large hens for my girlfriend.  She keeps the Cockerel in a chicken run by himself.  Might be a silly question to ask.  Would it be less lonelier for him if I put one of the little hens in with him to keep him company and obviously to mate. I dont think one of the larger hens would do as they are tall.  Any thoughts appreciated

Hi Rob

Do you know why he is separate? Is he related (ie brother to the hens - only an issue if she wants to breed from him which she shouldn't if he is their bro), sick, riddled with lice, agressive etc etc?  Will u get into trouble if you put a lady in with him?

If not - I think the poor boy needs a lady!!  He must be going mad seeing all those hot chicks parading in front of him   ???

ditto Bexy, you run the the risk of incurring the wrath of your girlfriend if you interefere with her chickens! better to wait until you can find out why he's separate from the girls.

I totally agree with Bexy and themagictoad.  The cockerel is separate for a reason and you are only babysitting.

By the way, what difference if the hens are too big?  Cock birds jump onto the hen's back to mate.

I agree with the others, find out first why, my OH has interfered with these things before and i've done it for a reason. My Pekin Frizzle cockerel was free ranging and terrorising the girls, he couldn't quite manage the large Cochin girls  and he would grab on anywhere ,this made her comb bleed a bit, luckily i got there when 1 of the others started to peck at the blood. My little Devil in short trousers has now has a large run with ickle girlies :)
We have 17 chickens, 3 quail, 2 dogs, 3 cats and that's enough (for this week)

I'd be livid if someone changed around my chooks, as my hubbie did when I had seperated 2 hens, to give them 3 weeks of no cockerel to ensure parentage when putting new cockerel in with them, had to start the 3 weeks all over again!  However, it could be that she doesnt want fertile eating eggs! some people are funny about that. Ask her why they separate, and let us know?
