Lime on brassicas
« on: August 30, 2011, 22:03 »
Hi all,
I think I've gone and done somethign daft today.

Finally got my new brassica bed dug over and the autumn planting of baby plants ready for winter cropping went in.

I'd got some garden lime so....... I gave them a dusting. Yep thats right AFTER i'd put plants in the ground.

how bad is this and what if anything can I do to rescue plants if its very very bad!

Just rinse it off and it'll go on the ground (as originally intended)

Don't worry, you've done no harm to the plants.

Obviously as you now realise, the idea is to add it to the soil before planting, not after

I always put some in the planting hole, to discourage clubroot, so lime doesn't hurt them ;)

OK I should be fine! it is on the ground rather than the leaves, I guess I've been in such a rush with getting plot in late june I keep forgetting to do things in the right order!

Is it worth netting brassicas at this time of year?

Posrs edited to correct "brassicas" in thread title for search purposes

Although the cabbage whites have probably finished egg laying there are still the dreaded tree rats (pigeons) and they can strip a bed of brassicas very quickly.
So you don't need the fine net but you do need some protection!
