Raspberry Canes
« on: November 20, 2012, 21:12 »
I purchased some bare root canes at start of September, hoping to plant on a new allotement early October. I had put them into pots to keep them going. I am only now in a position to plant them out. Here’s my problem. Normally you would prune the bare canes down to about 12″ after planting and when new shoots are growing prune all old cane down to the ground. My canes have now produced shoots, leaves and flowers in the pots. If I plant them out on my allotment, should I still prune down the old cane even though it is heathy and growing?

Welcome to the site  :D

Are they summer or autumn fruiting varieties?  Did they have any raspberries on when you bought them?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

They are a summer fruiting variety and came as bare root "sticks"!!!! Basically they looked like a dead brown stick about 4 foot long with roots!!!! All the leaves, flowers and fruit have appeared over the last couple of months.

Edited to tidy up quote

If the fruits have appeared over
Quote
the last couple of months.

this indicates they are Autumn fruiting rather than summer fruiting  ::)

This kind had all the stems cut down to the ground in winter as you thought.

why a shame?

The new stems that grow will flower and fruit next year - cut them down to the ground next winter and they will grow again etc etc  :)

That prompts a question from me, and I hope I'm not de-railing your thread John:

I received a dozen rasperry canes over a week ago and it's just been to wet and miserable to put them in the ground. Currently they're wrapped up in damp newspaper on the floor of my shed; would it be advisable to plant them into pots while I wait for the weather to get a bit better to plant them out? How did the potting work out for you John?
Aquired a full plot on 13th April; exited and a little awed in equal measure.

Just put them in the ground before the soil gets cold
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.
