poorly hen
« on: May 28, 2014, 11:35 »
One of my ladies have just past away  :(. When I went to put them to bed last night I noticed she was laid slumped up against the corner of the nest box. When I picked her up she felt solid like she was dead but she still was moving her head so I separated her from the others for the night. As I went to check on her this mornin she was still alive which was a shock. But after a couple more hours she passed. I would of put her out of her misery my self but I don't know how. Can any one help me please?

Sorry to hear you lost one of your girls, and I'm afraid I cant help you a great deal.  When I first started chicken keeping I thoroughly looked into the techniques of culling a hen.  There's loads of stuff on the internet, videos that show how to do it properly, and there's also a step by step descriptive on this site.  When push came to shove, I just couldnt do it.  I've been lucky in that I've only lost 3 hens in the past couple of years, and 2 of them passed away overnight.  The 3rd was clearly ill, and suffering, so I took her to my vets and had her put to sleep.

If you cannot do it yourself you should try to find someone locally that may be able to help in an emergency. :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!
