ok my curiosity got the better of me when spotting a spear and jackson american style digging shovel.
One of those straight long handled shield shaped things that have been around for donkeys years in the states.
well it was half price in homebase only £7 in a clearance sale so i thought i would try it for digging trenches.
I highly recommend them for this purpose. i have just dug five trenches in the rain much quicker and easier than a normal spade with no back ache due to the long handle.
It will not replace my trusty spade for everything but i will always use this new toy for trenching and deep holes and i am pretty sure it will make mixing cement easier too
perhaps those americans did know something after all

I bought one as well and would recommend them (although I'm never one to praise the North Americans and mine is Cornish). The only problem I find is a tendency for it to twist when digging into the heavy soil because I have to hold the handle further away to keep the blade upright when digging in.
Its great as a shovel as well for moving piles of soil about.

The 2nd picture is more like a Cornish shovel although the handles are usually a lot thicker than that

I bought a plastic snow shovel that looks just like a metal shovel and could not believe how much lighter it was and how little I felt it on my back compared to it's metal brother.

If you want to start World War III, tell Devon gardeners the Cornish invented it - I worked in Devon for a year and all the gardeners used to refer to the DEVON shovel - I was never brave enough to suggest it might be Cornish, having seen what happened to those who made that mistake! ::) You find a similar reaction if you refer to the Devon shovel in Cornwall :D

I'm Cornish living in Devon (only just over the border you'll notice ;) ) and it does all make me laugh. We argue over tools, cream teas anything really!!
My partner is Plymouth born and bred - he'll argue Dartmoor is the most beautiful, I'll argue that Bodmin Moor is more beautiful - I find Dartmoor too barren! :D
He keeps telling me my thumbs aren't real either! :lol:
It's definitely a CORNISH shovel! :tongue2:
