Has beans
« on: June 05, 2008, 09:00 »
Dear Members,

Owing to the rain a lot of my broad beans and runner beans failed to raise their heads above the parapet and when they did they got them bitten off by slugs, in spite of the slug pellets. So I've been growing them in paper pots. They came up yesterday, and they have shot up this morning, all long and spindly. The rain is still chucking down outside. Do I dare plant them outside in this weather and, given their spindliness should I cover them up to the leaf or will they fatten out a bit once they get into the soil.

broad beans are hardy and will tolerate bad weather including wet.  I tend to plant them up to the first lot of leaves. They'll get going ok

Hi Anton - my planted out runners also didn't survive the wind and the rain. I've done two new sowings - one indoors in pots and the other straight into the ground. If you've got enough beans, I'd be tempted to do another into-the-ground sowing to back up your spindly beans.
