small plastic greenhouses
« on: January 28, 2010, 16:13 »
Hi all,

Ive just registered and am new to all this gardening and growing stuff thing.

I have decided to grow some veg and herbs and have bought one of those small (about 5ft) plastic greenhouses.

I have bought compost and seeds for tomatoes and basil and something else i cant remember now. Oh yeah and some seed trays.

I know obviousy i have to plant the seeds in the trays and water them.

What i wanted to know is taht if i put them in this plastic greenhouse on the shelves in this weather will they die or will they be okay.

the seeds say i can sow them now and am eager to do this.

Please help im am an absolute useless person when it comes to anything like this and just wanted to give it a go.

I want to be successful. Please help me peeps.

Also how often do i have to water them and put them in bigger pots etc.

i really am useless arnt i ????

Thanks in anticipation of some positive response.

Without additional heating, it's going to be way too cold for some seed, but OK for others such as brassicas. Depends what the other thing is you've forgotten - you obviously wanted to grow it badly!

Have a read of this thread before jumping too far ahead of yourself.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I think you need a book dear.

I would recommend Vegetable Growing Month by Month

Not out of your depth - but too early!

Tomatoes, peppers and basil all need a lot of warmth.  You need to sow them somewhere warm - perhaps a kitchen window sill - around March time and then move them to your greenhouse when they have grown a bit and the weather has got warm.

I would warn you, that if you using one of them cheapplastic greenhouses that they have a tendancy to blow away or callopse unless tied down properly, talking from experience  :(

Yes, I had several types of spuds all neatly laid out chitting in one a couple of years ago, then the wind came and blew the thing over and mixed up all my spuds. I couldn't really tell which was which then so they all just went in the ground randomly.
I put a big sack of wet sand in mine now, at the bottom.

too cold at the mo, with significant frost danger. I DO understand your impatience to get going though!!
small, Welsh and almost certainly bonkers, but can be tamed with Talisker, if required

thank you very much for all your comments.....

so im going to sow them in trays and keep them in the house where its warm and then transfer them to the plastic greenhouse when the weather gets warmer and im definately going to put something heavy in the bottom of it to keep it from blowing away.

i will be so made up if i get just a little bit of something from them it will inspire me to carry on for years to come.

thank you again. i will keep bobbing on here for tips and advice. hope thats okay with you all and many thanks again.

Another tip i was taught was have a wander down to the local allotment site find yourself an OAP there and after putting the world to rights the wealth of knowledge and information they will give you is emense and some times better than books. Specially when it comes to local growing seasons as up here int he north our growing will start later this year with the frost and snow still threatening and its soaking down the plot
