Winter/Spring Red Cabbage?
« on: January 19, 2014, 14:14 »
Just doing my planning for the coming season: are there any red spring cabbages?  If not, which are the best red varieties for winter harvest that stand well, that I could be harvesting this time next year? Thanks x

I've only seen varieties for Autumn harvest - I still have a few that I cut, just before Christmas, and stored in the shed. The outsides go gungy but the hearts are still ok for salads  ;) Mind you it has been mild this year.

They're Red Flare.

I use Red Drumhead.  According to the packet it is an Autumn cabbage but I always leave a few in over winter and they have always been fine until the spring.  In fact some years I have sown a few quite late in the summer such that they were still small over winter and they sit outside OK until spring becoming hugh red cabbages by the following summer!
