help growing basil
« on: May 30, 2013, 14:20 »
I'm having no real luck growing Basil.
The plant is always feeble and just never grows or spreads more than a few inches at most
Its really the only herb that fails for me.
I have great crops of many other herbs.

I start them off in the greenhouse and windowsill and plant out in the herb area or in pots.
They do not seem to have any signs of problems, just no growth.
Any tips or varieties that may work better.

good drainage and plenty of warmth - mine are going good guns at the moment, but they're still all in the g/h. Just too wet and miserable out there at the moment. Will probably keep them in too unless it really picks up.

Best of luck.

Basil can be a problem, and I think it has shown me my own weaknesses.
Plant at the right temperature and don't overwater. I am prone to overwatering at too low a temperature.

I certainly wouldn't plant basil outside unless we were having some cracking weather.

Yes. Grow it in a greenhouse, preferably germinate it in a heated propagator. Expect at the most only 3/4 months successional cropping.... maybe another month of plants retreating half grown from the greenhouse to home on a windowsill in October.

Once it's up, it's a doddle, apart from the usual Summer aphids.

once my tom plants and peppers etc are in, in the GH or PT, I sow a row of basil near them so as to be ready for soups etc and to deter whitefly. Seems to work.

I just buy one of those £1 plants from the supermarket, I then break it into 4 plants. Then plant it in front of my toms in the polytunnel, it works and is a lot less hassle than seed as it is a fussy plant.

If you like the supermarket plants just nip out some shoots, they will root easily in a jar of water on the windowsill. Keeps the original bushy and provides replacements at the same time. In fact if you time it right you need never buy or sow basil again.
