Am I too late? A bloke on another lotty is growing them and has a great recipe (apparently) for pickled onions in sherry for Christmas! I'd like to give them a go....but is it too late??

First question is "can you get hold of any"?

It's very late in the season, shallots are one of the first things to go in the ground, mine have been in 3 months already. I think that even if you got some they wouldn't make a full size onion.

I tried some late shallots from a supermarket one year as mine weren't that good. Didn't get much more than the equivalent of larege spring onions.

I've planted them late a couple of times in the past using sets from the reduced section in B&Q (10p, couldn't resist!) but they didn't really come to anything. I think I read somewhere that they are sensitive to the length of daylight and need to be planted in early in the season for best results, when the days are shorter. I could be wrong about that tho.
