can anyone give me a bit of advice, i have been keeping chucks for about 4 years, but recently had a running with a fox/stray dog ? and lost my stock of 4 lovely girls, and thinking of starting over with young chicks, but not hatching eggs, can anyone suggest an age i should go for ?  and how long will they need a lamp/ heater for ?    many thanks

Chicks will need heat until at least 4 weeks old.  Well thats the official line but I ween mine off over the second two weeks by turning the lamp off during the day and having it on at night whilst keeping an eye on them to make sure they are ok.

Now as for the type its your choice :) but if you are not willing to deal with any cockerals that grow up I would go for an auto sexing breed.

Hope this helps a bit  ;) :D
