repotting cacti
« on: March 05, 2009, 19:17 »
i grew my own cacti mixed seeds early last year an out of about 200 seeds only 3 survived { for a beginner  i have been told thats good considering they were in a unheated greenhouse }  but i want to know if i can re pot them with fresh cacti soil .

Hello - now this is something I can help with ( makes a change!) yes you can re-pot - buy the right kind of compost, I added some grit too.  Ive got 4 or 5 in a low terracotta pot and theyve doubled in size since I repotted. They live outdoors in the summer and on the kitchen windowsill through the winter - really lovely now.  Good luck, and well done growing from seed ( i didnt do that bit!) :D

I know little about cacti but here's some I grew earlier….much earlier.

Started off the seed in the greenhouse....had loads come up but very intermittent germination so just left them to get on with it through the summer (out of full sunlight so they didn't shrivel up)...as I thought they might do.

Planted up a few small pots (over watered some so lost them and under-watered others with the same results!!) But these few survived my "care".

 lovely flowers - bigguns.

There is one thing I am good at growing: cacti. Got several that are many feet tall. I do all the wrong things - no special compost - just ordinary stuff - I neglect them - too hot, too cold, too wet, too dry. I throw it all at them but they still seem to grow. I've got some that are getting on for 20 years old. I really don't know how they survive!

The above blooms, in real life are the size of a tea saucer in diameter and have the most glorious night-time scent. The blooms only last a couple of days too.

Oh and when I repot my cacti I end up looking like I came of worst in a wrestling match with an angry porcupine.
