Advice needed for egg/chick
« on: June 29, 2014, 11:49 »
Have 5 eggs, first 1 egg moved a couple of days ago then another, other 3 haven't seen moving. 1st 2 eggs are peeping today, other 3 are silent.
Roberta is taken off twice a day to eat/poop.
When chicks hatch, should I continue to remove her and chicks to chick crumb or leave her in situ? She has straw in with her, but main area is clear...
How long should I allow her to continue to sit? Due date was Friday...hoping chicks today/tom morning.

Thank you

Hi

Leave her alone once the eggs have started hatching because she needs to keep the chicks warm and dry - she will start to get up and move about of her own accord when she is ready, plus she may have a chick tucked under her wing and if you try and move her out you may crush it. With regards the other eggs, there are posts on this site that show some eggs hatching up to 28 days. If she hasn't pushed them away (which they usually do if the egg isn't viable), it may mean that they are simply not ready yet. You will know when there is no more hope of the eggs hatching when the hen gets up and starts leaving the eggs of her own accord.

Don't forget to place some small pebbles in their drinking water to stop the chicks falling in - they can drown very easily when small.

Hoping she will get up as she has always managed to hatch all eggs before and she does not like being taken off to eat/poop.
Have removed as much excess straw as poss....egg break through on one.
Does it help to handle early for tameness as it would be nice to have some tame ones.

Leave her alone for a while with them - they have to bond and if you try and handle too early she may reject them. Best way to get them used to you is with food. When the chicks are a week or so old, feed mum from your hand with chick crumb and hold it down low enough so the chicks can climb in if they want to. This way they all get used to you and mum won't feel threatened if you try and handle the chicks. Just take everything nice and slow - patience is a must! :D

Mum has had the 2 chicks feeding and went straight back onto the remaining eggs.
