Perches
« on: August 30, 2007, 21:05 »
Hi
I'm in the middle of getting my housing sorted for my new arrivals (hopefully at the end of Sept).  I am going for bantams (1 light sussex and 1 buff orp).  I need to put the perch in this weekend can anyone advise me on length, width and height for bantams?  Can I use a branch if I treat it first?
Any help gratefully received.

According to an old Smallholder magazine I've been reading today, perches should be about 10-12 inches off the ground (ours are actually a bit higher) and you should allow 7.5 inches per bird!!!!  As they crowd together, in our small henhouse, our new POL's sit 10 on one perch and 2 on the other one, even though both perches are identical, except the popular perch is 2 inches lower than the other one!

And we have had branches as perches before, after all, chickens are tree dwellers!!!!

I bet you can hardly wait for your chickens to arrive i have only had mine a week and its amazing all the fuss you find you go to getting it all just so, but it IS worth it I love em.

I was advised to put my perch 14 to 18 inches up and my birds are bovan goldlines and amberlincs.  It is good if the perches are removable for cleaning too.

It would be good to see some pics once they arrive  :D
ok so I know its a daft question but Im cute ......

banties 12 to 18 inch  from ground. width of the shed is fine for both banties and bigguns . the thickness is whats important it needs to be no more than 1.1/2 inch thick and yes use branches by all means
