Hi I have 12 Black Rock Chicks 9 weeks old. I have had them in the coop for 2 days now. How long should l keep them in for before letting them in to a enclosed run. I am a complete novice  in chicken keeping and would welcome some advice please.

Thanks Kate

As l am new to all this l shall be back and forwards to this site l think. I have let my 9 week old chicks out for the first time today.  Well they have popped their heads around the entrance  but have decided not to come out yet. Probably a bit too cold for them. Will have to make sure l get them in before it gets too cold later on. :D

Thanks Alby

I too have just got my birds locally for the same reason as you. Paid £6.50 each and they are in excellent conditin. I am surprised they are so friendly and already coming forward to my out stretched hand. Just going down to the allotment now to shut them up (That is if they have made it out, theywere a little shy of oming out as it will be the first time in the big world for them.

Hi Alby
My chicks are settling in well and eating me out of house & home l am pleased to say. I actually paid £6.00 each for them as l had them at 9 weeeks instead of 10.
I had them from a place called Tividale on the road towards Widdrington Station to Ellington (1/4 mile from Ellington Caravan Park).
The people there are very helpfull and the place is clean & tidy. I would definitly go back there for more birds if l wanted some. 12 is enough for me at the moment though. Their Tel No is (07944) 940254 :D  :D

Hi Alby
Must take some photo's as soon as l can get my chicks to stay still long enough and as soon as l can find out how  to put them on the site. As the height of my run is about 7ft they are fluttering about a lot. They seem to be quite a happy little bunch. Afraid l shall be wasting a lot of time with them. It is so lovely to watch them come down the entrance ramp in the morning. (watched them for 20mins with my dog Sid (German Shepherd Dog).

Bye for now Neighbour  :D

Well what a surprise having our chicks from the same place. It's so true about the saying "It's a small world" isn't it. Quite amusing really.

Hope you will be as pleased with your little chicks as l was with mine.

Mine were giving me the run around last night and did not want to go to "Bed". My husband could not stop laughing at my attempts to herd them up the ramp in to the coop. He said "just grab them and put them in or you will be here until morning." :D  I was a bit worried l would hurt them doing that. Shows just how much a novice l am. All went in eventually. -- Thank Goodness. :D  :D   Worn out Tuffty
