Pallet decking
« on: October 07, 2014, 19:09 »
I am so pleased with myself so apologies for the post, I just wanted to share. I have planned to build an area of decking by the potting shed for the last year to put a Bistro table set on. My sister kindly bought me a Bistro set for my Birthday which has been sat forlornly in my garage since June.

A plot neighbour kindly gave me two amazingly robust pallets which I dragged up the plot to see if they would fit in the area I had earmarked for them. I had planned to screw decking boards onto the top to make an area that was level and solid so that chair legs didn't disappear down any gaps.

As I was making sure that the pallets were level I noticed that the gaps between the pallet slats were a similar width to some batten that I had. So out came the saw and rubber mallet to gently tease the slightly tight fitting ones into where I wanted them to go.

All in all the process took 15 minutes to assemble, I think this may be my proudest DIY attempt. I had come off a 12 hour night shift this morning and haven't yet been to sleep so didn't think that my brain cells would fire so successfully

And here it is, my pallet decking area with Bistro set. The picture of myself was taken by a plot neighbour who was as excited as I was at the outcome and produced a lovely bunch of flowers to place on the table!

Looks really good well done.
My pallet adventures end up functional rather than aesthetic..  ;)

Cheers,

Best way if you can do it. I reckon any plans of me changing career to garden design are probably not going to happen..  :)
I wish I could.... but I don’t think I can  Your plot looks like the sort of plot Mrs Balders would like - maybe that's why mine doesn't

Cheers,
Balders

Thanks, I'm going to finish the sides off with decking boards just to tidy it up. I'm thinking of making a pergola to go above it with either a grape vine or a highly scented climber growing up it.  :D

I carried on building as I wanted an area where I could cook using the stove and portable gas BBQ.I also tidied up the rest of the decking with boards along its side.

All was completed with materials I already had on the plot, the top of the BBQ area is finished with decking squares, their gaps filled in with cut bamboo canes to fit in with the difference in colour on the decking area.  :D

Overall I'm really happy with it, I just need the weather to dry up so I can varnish it all now!

That looks great, I'd be tempted to stain it some lovely colours, or is that over the top for the Lottie?
