We have some quail, started with 12 but slowly they are dying off, we are now down to only 9, I have kept chickens for about 25years, but only just started with the Quail, anyone any suggestions ?

hi sorry haven't been back for a while
the quail were new this year, about march time, about 5 moths old.we started with 2 males and 10 female, we are down to 1 male and 8 female one is in isolation because of injury, over zealous male.
 we are feeding them layers mash, finch food as a treat, greens every other day, I have given them vermin X in their water, I wondered if there is anything else i can do, or if I am missing something. they live outside in a small chicken hutch with a run that we turf from time to time, because they turn the grass to mud.

You can get specialist Quail food which is quite expensive, but if this is not available/ affordable then chick crumb (not layers pellets) is the closest thing.  We give our Quail this (six girls all over a year with us) and they are fine.  Other than that we just provide water budgie grit and occasional treats and they are fine.  Quail are susceptible to very cold conditions but this is not likely to be the cause at this time of the year.  I would try changing their diet and see if they do better
