Inferior shell quality
« on: April 01, 2010, 09:59 »
Hi I am having problems with the quality of my lemon cuckoo pekins eggs, they are laying eggs with really porous shells they look ok but you can see it when they are candled, this is their second year so they should be at their peak -they are fertile but dont hatch.

They are fed layers pellets, regularly get poultry spice, cod liver oil, and acv and always have oyster shell available, I have four hens and usually three out of four eggs  are like this, any help appreciated.

all eggs are pourus (this allows the embryo's to breath) have you tried giving them a little bit of limestone flour to strengthen them? or perhaps put them on breeders pellets instead of layers (never tried these myself but have heard about them)
Staffies are softer than you think.

Are the hens related ?  i.e. have they always been like that so could it be genetic ?

Otherwise as Joy says some extra calcium and vitamin D could help.
