Beer from malt extract
« on: September 26, 2012, 14:13 »
I've just started my first brew of ale using malt extract for some 15 years. Everything seems to be coming on fine but I'm finding it a tough time getting further recipes as they all seem to be one's using the actual grains, which is a bit too much for me. I don't want to go back to kits so I wondered if any of you had some good recipes lying about in your dusty drawers!! Bitter preferably, Cheers.
He's my best buddy, my dog called Woody.
If it works, organic. If it don't, well.........??

It's a very interesting subject isn't it. I don't drink any more so I use malt extract to make bread instead.  I like to use bottle fermented real ale to make a balm for bread, it's so good  :tongue2:

They were making ale on the BBC prog where they live back in the day. This time it's Tudor England. Fascinating to watch the bit about brewing ale.  I didn't realise the difference between ale and beer  :)  They talked a bit about malting the barley as they were doing this to make their own brew.  We have a delapidated old maltings near me. Such a pity that there are so few left  :(

Maybe with the rise in interest in brewing, these old skills might be brought back  :)  Sorry to digress

Presently we are slowly investing in kit to build a micro brewery. At the moment we still use malt extracts as a base. Creating ee recipes with diff hops spray malts etc. I'll send you some books info/ links next week.

Have you considered doing a partial mash or using the brew in a bag technique? No extra kit needed for either apart rom a mesh bag ( that you can make yourself) but means you can start playing around with grains.
Good beer, good BBQ and good friends.
