What makes onions bolt

Early sown Chinese Ok, shallots Ok but about a third of the reds have gone to seed, it has been very dry could this be the cause.

Reds are very prone to bolting and as you suggest one of the prime reasons is in your username!

Onions tend to bolt when the soil drys out then gets wet

I have stopped growing red onions due to bolting much to my wifes disappointment. Mine bolted when too dry then when too wet and when too warm when too cold and they bolted if I looked at them...
