Do you ever completely empty your water butts? Previous tenant on allotment had left a half butt right under a hawthorn hedge - not much light and lots of leaves fell in it. Two and a bit years later I've just cleaned it out (and it's big brother). Reminded me of nasty smells like bone yards used to be.

yeah only if it needs cleaning thought otherwise its a waste of water and when i say needs cleaning i mean all nast sludge at the bottom but otherwise i just leave it

Yeah I did wait till my was virtually empty and it was very nasty indeedy.
