jerusalem artichokes - which way up?!?
« on: May 01, 2010, 19:52 »
Hello All

(Oh dearie me I'm embarassed having to ask this...)

I planted my jerusalem artichoke tubers in the first week of April (I am in Scotland - near Glasgow). After about 3 weeks, no sign of any action so I dug one up today and found a large green shoot (and some smaller "roots") coming out of the "bottom" of the tuber and struggling to find its way up to the surface...so I re-planted it the other way up - then dug up the next 4 in the row and found they were all in the same state so have replanted them all the other way up (so that the end the shoot comes out of is at the top.)

Call me an idiot but am I doing the right thing - it seems like an unfortunate coincidence that I managed to plant them all upside-down, maybe the end that I thought was the "top" just turned out to be the "bottom".  I have another row of 5 so just want to check I'm getting it right before I dig those up & replant them as well....

Thanks
Tony

Planted some last year and never worried about which was top or bottom.  Mother nature has a wonderful way of sorting these things out.  I would leave them alone. :)

Leave them alone!  They obviously like growing from the underside!

yes i'd leave them alone too. Not sure there is a right way up to plant them. Also they do take quite a while to get to the surface and april is quite late to plant them.

Be patient and they should be fine :D

I agree with the above advice. Leave them be, the shoots that should go up will, and the roots that should go down will do so. :D :D

Does anyone have a picture of what they look like when they come up?  I was given some by a lovely member on here and they are in a bed on my new plot.  This is the first year it has every been used to grow things so there are lots of weed seeds in the ground and I don't want to pull out the wrong things!
