Hi Guys,

am looking to grow these this year, can someone give me an idea on how much to grow please!  For example, how many tubers will one planted tuber produce?

All my research seems to say to plant between Feb and April - any tips as to when's best - or other tips for that matter appreciated!

Hi there

You plant them and grow them like potatoes, one tuber every 12"- 18" apart. Like spuds each tuber should give you a crop of varying size tubers usually between 8 and 12 per plant, So how many you plant depends on how many you want to eat.
Because they are related to Sunflowers they grow up to 10 feet high, so be careful where you put them or they will shade your plot,I use them as a windbreak, talking of which some people can be badly effected by too much wind when eating these but I love them.
One more thing, when you harvest them be sure to get them all out or next Spring they will regrow, unless of course you want a permanent bed then it won't matter too much.

Try them before you plant them, assuming you haven't already!  

My reaction to them was more akin to food poisoning than just a bit of wind. Pity because my two plants produced about 8kg between them. I won't be growing them again....

:cheers:  Hi Jameshuk, re when to plant JA's I am a bit of a Lunie (Lunar Cycle Planting) fan. According to the "Gardeners Calender" 26th. Jan. is a new moon in the sign of Capricorn (earth sign) and a good time to plant JA's, Garlic and Horseradish. So my JA's will be going in on the 26th if soil conditions allow.
