Runner beans question.
« on: May 16, 2014, 18:56 »
Hi,

I have my runners growing well in 3" pots,  should I  plant outside now or is it still early? They are under a cloche at the moment but nice and strong?

Make sure you cover them if the temperature drops too far overnight - they will sulk ...
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

If they are still nice and compact and not putting up runners I would wait a week. If thet are getting out of hand plant them out now.

Thanks for the heads up, I am going to leave them as long as pos, they are  not out of hand, in fact only 6-8 inches high so a few days won't hurt from your comments. I'm just keen to get more stuff in now :-)

All of my first sowing are planted out now. As mentioned, temps for the next few days look ok, and we can't wait forever. I will be making another sowing at the end of the month anyways.

Mine went out today as well because they were getting stupidly tall. Next year I won't start them as early! Another runner bean related question. I damaged a couple of the growing tips. Will the plant put out a side shoot which will in effect become the main shoot or am I screwed?

As long as they broke above the seed leaves, they should grow new shoots

They are almost 2 foot tall and trying to get them to my allotment via bike was tricky! it was just the tip that snapped on two of them. if the slugs don't get them then hopefully they will grow :D
