They look lovely - I have thick clay too, just 6 inches down. Orange with a fabulous dark blue seam. The 2 beds I spent ages last year double digging, sifting and manuring are now getting to be lovely and friable - I'm going to spend much more time shovelling in manure this year. From anywhere I can get it!  :)

That's the only way to do it apparently. How are you managing to sift it? Our is way too sticky to go through any size holes :(

Dig chunks up, then I wait till it's dry enough to thwack with my hand-fork or spade into bits and pieces, then go through it by hand. Not the quickest of solutions, but all the stress from work is gone afterwards.
