They look lovely - I have thick clay too, just 6 inches down. Orange with a fabulous dark blue seam. The 2 beds I spent ages last year double digging, sifting and manuring are now getting to be lovely and friable - I'm going to spend much more time shovelling in manure this year. From anywhere I can get it!

That's the only way to do it apparently. How are you managing to sift it? Our is way too sticky to go through any size holes

Dig chunks up, then I wait till it's dry enough to thwack with my hand-fork or spade into bits and pieces, then go through it by hand. Not the quickest of solutions, but all the stress from work is gone afterwards.
