2 beds to fill - 9 types of veg to plant
« on: March 19, 2010, 22:18 »
Dear All,

Your help please with what veg to plant with what veg.

I have two beds left to plant, both 1.25m(about 5 feet) by 5.25m (about 16 feet) and have the following seeds left to plant.

Fly Away carrots
Salsify
Avonreister Parsnips
Medania Spinach
Snowball turnips
Boltardy Beetroot
Swede
Spring Onions
and
Radishes

My current thought is to plant the Carrots, Salsify, Parsnips and Spring onions in one bed and the rest (Spinach, Turnips, Swede, Radishes and Beetroot) in the other.

If it helps only one bed has been manured (for the carrots?).

Secondly within each bed am I able to do alternate rows of each seed as I plant more throughout the season or should I keep like with like?

Thanks

Why not try block planting or square foot gardening. If you have a limited space this is definitely the best method and it allows you to sow small amounts to get a succession of crops through the season. Conventional wisdom also says that you shouldn't use fresh manure on a plot that is to grow root crops like carrots and parsnips.

Solway is right, plant your carrots in fresh manure and you get helping hands!!

Actually this one wasn't in fresh manure, but you get my drift?   :D :D

Lovely picture!!

That means that the carrots go in the un-manured bed.

That leaves 8 types of veg left to divide between the two beds. I have the space to put in another bed but I am busy trying to recover the last 20 foot of my plot from stinging nettles before they try and steal yet more ground from me (New plot last year which hadn't been cultivated for several years....I now have 80 foot being cultivated with 35 foot to reclaim). So ideally I would like to split all the seeds between the two beds

Thanks
