vine weevil again
« on: March 12, 2012, 13:15 »
I thought I had managed to get rid of the vine weevil in my pots last year but I have just had a dig around and found yet more!  Is there any effective way of getting rid of them without having to dig up the plants which have overwintered.  Fuchsias and some geraniums.  I did buy some stuff last year which had to be watered on but it obviously didn't work too well!
Would be very grateful for advice.  Thank you

Provado works well.  If you are organic or want to use it on edibles there is also a nemasys biological control.

Thanks for the advice.  I have now found the box and it was Provado I used last year!  Maybe you should keep using it as a precaution - not sure?
I am curious why I should have suddenly for two years running have got these vine weevils when I have never had any problems before?  What makes them suddenly take a liking to a garden I wonder?  Any suggestions.
I have now emptied EVERY pot I own - and there are loads and replanted them with new compost so am hoping I may have got rid of them.
Do you think I should still use the Provado though - just in case.

You may have inadvertantly imported a vine weevil fat with eggs, or some grubs, via a garden centre  purchase.

Hadn't thought of that!  At least the chickens like them so it isn't all bad!

This happened to me last year Sunshine.  No problems for 13 years and then went to move my new heuchera and the top came off in my hand.
It's certainly taught me a lesson and I shall be fully inspecting any imports in future!
