My chit pototos went slimy and rotton
« on: March 15, 2008, 13:28 »
I thought I was doing so well. I bought my early pototos and it said on the packet to put to chit in a light dry place. so I put them on a shelf in the shod by a sunny window. they ALL went mushy, black and smelt rotten. what did i do wrong. I seem to remember my Dad (over 50 years ago) putting his to chit in the dark so my next lot I have put them in a dark cupboard. Is that correct please.

You're right they need to somewhere cool and light and FROST FREE.  That might have been your problem (even in a shed).

I cover mine with 4 layers of fleece if the night is going to be frosty.

Sounds like frost to me ! too cold in a shed IMHO mine only went into the greenhouse last week and only then cause I need the room in the house, like Aunty says protect from frost.
And they do need the light, if you keep them in the dark you'll end up with long and very brittle chits, which are perfectly ok IF you can move and plant the spud without breaking them off.

Soon as I read the title I knew someone's spuds had gotten too cold (frozen). A roof overhead doesn't ensure warmth.

thanks everyone. It must be the frost then. I thought they were maybe potooes from last years blighted ones. Some of them were a bit bad when I opened the bag just as if they had blight

Still not too late to get more chitting though! And plenty more opportunity for schoolboy jokes as well.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.
