hello to you all

been reading the threads with much interest, we are about to get some chickens but need some advise on which are the best to get with regard to laying.

my husband is just finishing off the run and the coop is being delivered next week.

we are thinking of buying youngsters and bringing them on so they get used to us an their new surroundings.

we obviously would like birds that will give us some lovely eggs, were thinking of cream legbars, light sussex and orpingtons can you give advise on these birds and if they would be suitable for us, you all seem to have a wealth of experience so I am hoping you can impart some our way

Hi Pauline!

I'm not much use as an advisor - I can tell you that our ISA browns have laid an egg each for the last couple of days despite the stress of moving house, and had laid an egg each since the lady who gave me them had got them. But it's early days and I'm still learning lots too.. sure someone will be along soon with some good advice  :D

Nice to meet you anyway! Welcome to the forum  :D

I'd advise you to find out where your nearby suppliers are and ask what laying hybrids they have in stock.

Legbars are blue egg layers if my aged memory serves me right, nice birds (a friend of mine has one).  They will therefore be expensive and perhaps hard to find.  Orpingtons are good meat and egg birds, quite big though.  Light Sussex are also good for both.

hi pauline,

welcome to the forum.

i cant really help on the best layers either as i like pretty or odd looking chooks and not really worried about how much they lay.

but hybrids will be better than pure breds - i think.

great help will be along shortly im sure.

Cream Legbars are beautiful and lay blue eggs.

Light sussex are good layers  also.

The orpingtons are very pretty, but dont seem to lay as many eggs in fact my OH calls our oprs "the ornaments"

Good luck

It a good idea to get less birds than you want then next year when the opingtons go broody (which I believe they are prone to) stick a few fertile legbar eggs under and its a cheap way of getting the more pricey birds. Plus you have the fun of chicks!   :D
