planting strawberries
« on: November 18, 2012, 00:10 »
I  dug out my strawberry bed as I was rearranging the plot and put most of them in trays covered with compost- about 30 runners a tray. The space they are going in will be ready soon. Is it too late to plant them now and if so what should I do with them?
They are currently all outside still and my soil is clay but drains ok. I also have an unheated greenhouse

Thanks,
dmg

If you can work your soil at all, give it whatever nutrients you can: bonemeal, bloodmeal, rotted manure, compost, etc. And then plant your strawberries. As long as the ground is workable, it's never too late for them. They won't grow much until spring but that's okay. The roots will be spreading and that's the needed part.

Also remember to firm soil only to the crown.

If the plants have no roots just use a piece of bent wire as a staple to hold them in place, a decent sized stone will do the same if you cannot find the wire ! :)
