Newspaper Briquettes
« on: December 19, 2013, 20:02 »
Anyone make and use them for heating? Soon moving to house with multifuel burner and will mostly use smokeless fuel and wood( pallets) but wondered whether it was worth making the newspaper briquettes? Also have read in some places about soaking or maybe dampening them with old cooking oil to get a better burn sounds a bit smelly to me what thoughts do people have?

Made a start have beds established but moved in too late for serious planting. We shall see what 2015 brings.

I've a sneaking suspicion they may have been discussed on the forum in the past; might be worth doing a search.

I'm definitely not convinced by the idea of cooking oil, though!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Thanks for the link. We take a large format newspaper every day and am getting the briquette maker from Freecycle so will give it a go. The house we are moving to is pretty isolated so will save a trip to the dustbin( half mile away) to recycle paper. So should be a saving all ways round.

We made some last year, I mixed a little very cheap wallpaper paste into some of them, but it made everything sticky.

They are okay, but a faff to make, and take a while to dry out.  I stored ours in the end of my polytunnel, on a pallet, with plenty of space around them until they were properly dry.

This is the thing that I have used in the past. Very simple to use and they make good brick for burning as well. Have a look.

Have made them in the past using a device similar to the one in miggs' link.

They are okay, but a faff to make, and take a while long time to dry out.

Verdict: not worth the bother.

wouldn't be without my briquette making press gadget.

Mostly use shreddies (bank statement plus pretty well any other paper that I don't want as long as there isnt too much of a glaze on it.)  I save up the bits whenever the shredder is full and periodicaly have a half hour in the sunshine soaking the shreddies then forming them up.  I leave them to dry for months though (stand my long plastic seed tray holders on them) and even sometimes finish them off on waste heat from the boiler.   When I have any coal dust in the bunker I tend to mix that in too, ditto sawdust...  not tried oils - prefer the nice clean burn of the pure paper ones best.

Apart from the coal dust and sawdust, it is fun to make a few with a reasonable proportion of (shredded) shiny wrapping paper - get some lovely coloured flames!

Not sure about using them as a major heat source - but breaking them over the hearth edge leaves lovely rough faces in the split that makes them really useful for coaxing back into life a fire that is on its last dull embers as the hanging paper shreds lights readily.
