I have several pumpkin plants and they have small pumpkins on the size of eggs. When should I put something under them and what  is recommended.  never grown before would the same apply to squash.

Wait until they start to swell so that you know they've been fertilised. If you want a nice round pumpkin then you need to use something like straw and pad it all around. If you don't mind a flat spot, just stick a flat stone or small paving slab underneath. It's easier to do when they're small. The stalk can get quite brittle as they grown and lifting it to put the support underneath sometimes results in breaking it.

Old dinner plates (upturned so water can't sit in them), bricks, old roof slates etc

My oh my... I don't fancy doing that with the amount lovely neighbours have planted on our plot! They're like triffids, you can see them growing and you have to go out every day to move them away from other stuff. Looks as if they are different ones in the three beds though. Who is going to eat them all I wonder?
