Impacted crop?
« on: April 27, 2010, 12:27 »
I have a one year old Hybrid with a huge crop. Its not hard but feels gritty and grainy, she's lively and bright and is still eating. Tried warm olive oil and massage but it made no difference. The crop changes shape and gets bigger and smaller but is never empty.is it an impacted crop and if sowhat morecan I do or is she just a really greedy chicken??

that is normal, the gritty grainy feel is the layers pellets and mixed corn (if that is what you give them) mixed up with poultry grit or small stones and oyster shell. Remember they have no teeth so it all gets stored in their crop which is why it gets bigger during the day  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

I'm still a bit concerned. The crop is so big her feathers don't meet and it's three times larger than the Speckledy and the Sussex.  :(

it should be empty first thing in the morning not full so it is possibly impacted or partially impacted. If you type impacted crop in the search box above you will find all sorts of information where people have tried maggots and oil massage to clear it  :)
