Red mite - how long before relaying starts?
« on: October 23, 2010, 10:22 »
I have been treating the chickens and hutch for red mite. Colder weather is doing the job rather than the products I have used me thinks.  The Chooks have moulted and combs are light pink in colour indicating all is not well.

We will move the hutch and electric fence to a new location which gets more of the winter sun.

Any ideas as to what to do differently to perk them back up to laying again?
Learning... always learning!

Hi Stablechooks, I am in no way an expert but have found that at this time of year egg  production slows (or in our case stops altogether).  We have 10 hens and have not had any eggs for almost a month now.

Hopefully someone more experienced will come along and have more info for you.

Good luck

Hello Stablechooks,
I would agree with Kathie here.  I was getting 4 or 5 eggs a day from my six banties but now it has dropped to 1 or 2.  There is a good info thread about getting ready for winter if you look through the info threads at the top of the list.
11 bantams (and counting!) 2 dogs 1 cat

Any treatment you do must be done at a minimum of 10 days apart or sooner if possible. As said get the mite sorted and the rest will follow. If you don't you will be back to square one or worse next Spring.

If they aren't hybrids the chances are it may be after Christmas when the days start to get longer before they lay again. :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!
