Nest box material

We have always had wood shavings and a small amount of straw in the nest boxes (actually they only use one, so I tend to ignore the other two now).   Recently though, the nest box has been scraped out clean down to the vinyl flooring  .  Not very cosy I would have thought, so I put a nice handful of clean straw in there thinking they would find it nicer. No.. Out it all came and we're down to vinyl again!  I do realise that if they like it like this, then that's fine, but is it normal behaviour?

Mine do that sometimes, but like you I'm not sure why :?

I just tend to leave them to it

Mine are also doing it at the moment.  I was wondering if it was because I have been putting a small dish of corn in the henhouse at night just now because by the time I get home from work, they have gone to bed!

Wouldn't you think they'd want more insulation in this weather as well? Strange birds they are. :D

mine do it with straw so I put some Aubiose in to a good depth and then just top it up with straw.

Just a thought but could there be anything lurking under the vinyl and they're scratching the straw out to get to them ??

I hope that's not the case, but it occurred to me. :?

I hadn't thought of that, I shall check.  But I suspect not, because that's the only place they do it. Fingers crossed!
