Frozen Leek seeds
« on: February 10, 2012, 10:34 »
SO sowed some leeks last week just before we had snow and freezing weather, I sowed them in a polystyrene box like so

then put them outside in a fleeced blow-a-way

with lots of fleece over the box after the snow think it was Sunday I checked on them to find the compost frozen, I put them in the outhouse to thaw overnight and have now moved then into one of my heated propagators.

Do you think the seed will germinate or should I buy need seed?

Thanks CS  :)

They may be OK if they got frozen before they started to germinate.

They don't need a heated propagator, though, it's going from one extreme to another.

Gentle warmth at this stage is sufficient.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I've took them out the heated prop and put them on kitchen window sill, I don't think they had time to germinate before freezing, there is one little shoot sticking through the compost though so I could be lucky, I'll let you know.

Thanks for you in put!  :)

Fingers crossed.

Once they've germinated, they need to go to somewhere light, cool, but frost free. They won't like it inside for too long.

Absolutely. I started mine in the house, once germinated they went straight into the just frost free greenhouse.

Well I needn't of worried about the frozen leeks seed, looks like nearly all 50 seeds have germinated. These will go inside some kitchen paper rolls as a experiment, I'd like to see if I can blanch them. Worth a go I think, I'll be sowing more leeks at the end of next month.

Thanks for you input  :D

Kitchen roll tubes are likely to disintegrate if they get wet, also you only need a reasonable size leek to split them.

A good deep, dibbed hole is all you need.

Pleased they germinated.
